Modern art is an artistic movement that was meant to shock its audience. The goal of this movement was to break the conventions and styles that previous artists had established.
Modern art covers a vast range of cultural and artistic practices, and it developed at the end of the 19th century. The term “modern art” first appeared in an English publication; its first appearance came in the title of an 1882 work by French artist Gustav Flaubert called “Modern art: Being Notes on Painting, Sculpture, Architecture.” Although modern artists were no longer constrained to only certain forms such as painting, sculptures, or music, 
they created arts ranging from literature to architecture. The following centuries witnessed masterpieces such as Picasso’s ‘Guernica’ to Dali’s ‘Mae West Lips Sofa.’ Modern masters like Warhol, Dali, Picasso created artworks characterized by the lack of boundaries around the artistic mediums.

The main characteristic of modern art is that it does not have to look like anything in particular. Pablo Picasso was born in 1881 in Spain to a family of artists. His father, a professor of drawing and painting, taught Picasso fine art from a young age. In 1895 when he was only 13-years old, Picasso’s mother passed away, leaving him raised by his sister and grandmother. After a short stint at the Royal Academy of San Fernando in Madrid, where he studied classical techniques, Picasso opted to take classes at the School of Arts and Crafts.
Pablo Picasso is best known for co-founding Cubism with Georges Braque in 1907, leading to an entirely new movement in modern art. Cubism marked a major transition from classic three-dimensional representation to abstract geometric shapes used as tools for exploring space and time. Some famous works by Picasso include Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907), Guernica (1937), a painting depicting the Spanish Civil War under Franco, and his contribution to surrealism with works such as Mae West Lips Sofa.
In addition to being an artist, Picasso was also a painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, stage designer, and poet. He produced more than 20 000 known artworks that were exhibited in hundreds of shows all over the world. He died on April 8th, 1973, at the age of 91, leaving behind a long-lasting legacy for modern art.
