EATING
OUT
Caff,
not naff
Jo Shardlow does Naff Caff
I
arrived at Naff Caff completely starving after a long walk.
Silly really, I went all the way to the original Naff Caff
branch in Kemptown. The staff there were very helpful and
phoned their man who told me it was the new Naff Caff in
York Place I was supposed be at! So back I went. At least
it helped me work up an appetite.
Naff
Caff in York Place is a straight-up, honest and simple cafe.
It is still new enough to be clean and hygenic, rather than
having the lard and fag ash clogged artery atmosphere of
some of Brighton's other cafes.
The
menu is based around Britain's greatest culinary gift to
the world: that's right, the all-day Breakfast (£4.95).
There are about ten different breakfast cominations to choose
from. They also do sandwiches and rolls to eat in or take
away.
I went
for the number one meal: sausage, bacon, beans, egg,
potato wedges, mushrooms and toast. My friend Karen had
a veggie meal - the same but with veggie sausage
and without the bacon.
I am
quite a fried food connoisseur, fry ups being the only meal
I am able to cook without mildly poisoning myself. In my
expert opinion, the Naff Caff have got it right. The bacon
was crispy, the egg was well-cooked, and the potato wegdes
crunchy. Karen and I agreed that the toast was also delicious
as it came in big thick slices, perfect for mopping up egg
yolk.
The
portions were huge, with the potato wedges in a great mountain
on the side of the plate. Naff Caff are not stingy, they
have got bottles of proper Heinz ketchup, not that cheap
industrial catering stuff.
We rounded
off our meal with the fizzy drink equivalent of the all-day
breakfast: a nourishing can of Irn-Bru. Lovely.
Essential
Information
Food: Tasty and unfussy fry ups, carefully cooked
and not swimming in grease. The perfect hangover cuisine
for those days when you get up so late that lunch is breakfast.
Atmosphere: Friendly and welcoming. There's plenty
of tables and lots of room. The miss-matched collection
of chairs gives it a relaxed and homely feel. The staff
have checked trousers which harmonize with the decor - a
nice touch.
